How to Setup Your New Chevy with the Chevrolet Owner Center

I just had my first experience trading in my previous GM model car and trading it in for a new one. And I want to share something I learned! Last weekend, I traded my 2014 Cruze LT for a 2016 Chevy Cruze LT.

I got out of my lease a year early, but I decided it was worth it for a few perks I wanted to have in my life. In my new car, I’ve got Apple Car Play and 24/7. I wrote a separate post about how awesome my new Cruze. But what I want to talk about in this post is about what I learned logging into Chevrolet Owner Center.

  1. Onstar Welcome Call: One of the first things to do when you take delivery of a new Chevrolet is to complete your Onstar Welcome Call.
  2. Create an Onstar Account: I didn’t need to do this, because I had an Onstar account I had created with my previous Cruze. But, if you didn’t create an Onstar account with your previous GM vehicle at Onstar.Com or via your Onstar Remote Link app, then you will need to use your new Onstar account number to do so. (Your Onstar advisor can give this to you during the Welcome Call, or it will come in your first Onstar email.) Create a user name and password.
  3. Login to the Chevrolet Owner Center: Visit My.Chevrolet.com and use your Onstar username and password to login. I took delivery of my new Cruze 6 days ago and finally got around to logging in today. To my delight, a window popped up with a picture of my new car titled “Welcome to MyChevrolet Owner SetUp.” Chevrolet Owner Center New Owner Set Up
  4. Click on “Get started” to customize your Wi-Fi hotspot username and password and ensure your advanced diagnostic notifications.
  5. Learn to pair (or re-pair) your bluetooth deviceChevy bluetooth pairing
  6. Practice sending a navigation route to your car via Onstar Guidance.Chevy navigation
  7. Discover ways to use the MyChevrolet app.mychevyapp
  8. Track your vehicle’s warranty, as well as be notified if your vehicle has a recall and keep all your service records in one place.chevy warranty tracker
  9. There’s so much more you can do and learn at your Chevrolet Owner Center, such as watch how to videos about your vehicle’s features, flip through your owner’s manual.

Why I Love My All-New 2016 Chevy Cruze

Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Guess what?! I traded in my 2014 Chevy Cruze LT, in Summit White, last weekend and traded it in for a 2016 Chevy Cruze LT, in Kinetic Blue — all-new, Baby!

I’ve already got more than 600 miles on it in less than a week! But it was July 4th weekend, so it’s to be expected. Right?

I got out of my lease a year early, but I decided it was worth it — for the all-new Cruze redesign, including better gas mileage, more space and Apple Car Play. The all new Cruze LT and Premier models also come with two years free Onstar Guidance Plan, two years free XM Radio and 24 gigs or 24 months of WiFi data. This lovely package is called the 2016 Cruze 24/7 Promise and — again — is only available on the All-New 2016 Chevrolet Cruze LT and Premier models. (See 24/7 flyer at end of post or download).

Not only is the technology cool in my All-New 2016 Cruze, but the ride is really great. I was a little hesitant about saying goodbye to my previous Cruze, because I felt it was a strong and solid little car. I enjoyed the quality and wasn’t sure how the all-new 1.4 L Turbo engine, with automatic stop/start technology in the new Cruze would compare to the previous version of the 1.4 L Turbo. But now, I can say that I’m thrilled.

My new Cruze feels light and nimble. It handles beautifully and it’s slightly longer wheel base makes for an even smoother ride. It’s also very quiet. And…there’s a ton more space for passenger comfort.

To quote the Edmunds review about the 2016 Cruze:

…the 2016 Cruze comes with a standard turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which Chevy has revised from the previous model year to make 15 more horsepower and 29 more pound-feet of torque. This engine has less work to do, too, as Chevrolet says the 2016 Cruze has shed about 250 pounds. Pleasingly, the redesigned Cruze is also a bit roomier, particularly for rear seat passengers. Four adults can now fit with comfort to spare.

How to Use Apple Car Play and Android Auto in Your 2016 Chevy

I wanted to show you a couple of videos about Apple Car Play and Android Auto in the 2016 Chevy Mylink infotainment systems. These aren’t my videos; I borrowed them from YouTube. I know, I totally need to make my own. I will soon!

The first video about Apple Car Play is for iPhone users, the second video about Android Auto is for Android users.

After Apple Car Play/Android Auto videos, I share a couple more YouTube gems about Chevy Mylink phone intergration, including Siri Hands Free, which is great if you’re in a 2014 or 15 Chevy, or even a 2016 Chevy that doesn’t have Chevy Mylink, but offers whats called “voice pass through.”

Enjoy! And please, contact me if you have questions or want to schedule a technology review with me.

7 Things To Do When You Buy a New Chevy

IMG_3912
Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.

I’m learning that people can easily get overwhelmed when they buy a new car. It can be hectic at the dealership. There are so many decisions to make, a lot of waiting around and tons of new information to digest.

Sometimes, by the end of a car deal, car buyers have simply had enough. There are a few new car owners who don’t even want to learn more about their new car; they just want to take their keys and go. But really, they’re missing out on a variety of features they could enjoy in their new Chevrolet.

In case this sounds like you, I’ve created a few tips to help you take advantage of — at least some — of the features your new Chevrolet offers. And, I strongly recommend you schedule a follow up appointment with your sales consultant (hopefully it was me) to review some of the technology features in your new vehicle, such as Chevy Mylink, bluetooth, Apple Car Play/Android Auto, Onstar, 4G LTE Wifi, and the Remote Link App.

Here are 7 things to do immediately, after taking delivery of your new Chevrolet:

  1. Take your picture with your new car. Post it to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter; text it, email it — and tell your friends about your sales consultant and the great service you hopefully received.
  2. Pair your phone to enjoy your vehicle’s blue tooth capabilities. Let your sales consultant help you, or check for the easy directions in your owner’s manual. Try bluetooth media streaming, Siri Hands Free and more!
  3. Push the blue Onstar button on your rear view mirror to complete your Onstar
Onstar welcome call. You will be asked to create a 4-digit pin, and customize a user name and password for your vehicle’s WiFi. Ask your advisor for your Onstar account number and write it down. Your advisor might ask you if you’d like to be enrolled in Dealer Maintenance Notifications. Say “yes.” You might also be asked if you’d like to be enrolled in continuous coverage or to buy WiFi data, both of which is completely up to you.
  4. Onstar Remote Link AppDownload the Onstar Remote Link App. Once in the App, go to “Create Account” and use the account number you received during the Onstar Welcome Call. (If you didn’t get it, don’t worry. It will come in your email within 24 hours of your Welcome Call.) Login with your new account info to enjoy the FREE Key Fob service for 5 years, even without keeping an Onstar paid subscription. P.S. Your 2016 or newer Chevy also comes with a 3-month WiFi trial AND with Onstar Basic for 5 years, including diagnostics and dealer maintenance notification (excludes emergency services). Learn more about Chevrolet apps.
  5. Try out Onstar Directions and Connections. Push the blue Onstar button and ask an advisor to send directions to your next destination. Learn how to store a destination and plan a route! You can also send directions to your car using your Remote Link app from anywhere. Directions will begin once the car starts.
  6. MyChevrolet AppGo to My.Chevrolet.com and login using your Onstar account login information. Here, you can manage ALL your GM vehicles‘ service records, warranty info, recall alerts, how-to videos and owners’ manuals. You can also access all your vehicles’ Sirius XM, GM Reward Card and Onstar accounts from the My.Chevrolet.com portal. Learn more.
  7. Download the MyChevrolet App. This app gives you easier access to call roadside assistance (which you get free for 5 years in a new Chevy). It also allows you to set parking reminders, access your Remote Link App, schedule a service appointment, view your owner’s manual and understand what light indicators mean in your car — all from the app. Learn more about Chevrolet apps.

The other thing that drives me crazy as a sales person, is that people actually forget they have free oil changes with their new car. I’ve had customers tell me they paid for their first oil change. Don’t let that be you! I want to remind you that you get two years free scheduled maintenance and free roadside assistance for five years from Chevrolet (or, free with Onstar while you have the free trial or a paid subscription).

Here are the complete details about your new Chevy’s service and warranties.

Take advantage of your two-year free scheduled maintenance, as well as five years roadside assistance and Onstar Basic.

How to Manage Your GM Vehicles’ Service Needs in One Place

Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.

I finally logged in to the Chevrolet Owner Center at My.Chevrolet.com and it was glorious. It’s a comprehensive way to manage all the service, warranty and extra offers that come with your GM vehicle. And, you can manage all the GM vehicles in your household in one place!

If you took delivery of a new GM vehicle recently, check out How to Setup Your New Chevy with the Chevrolet Owner Center.

The best way to log in to the Owner Center is to use your Onstar.com account user name — usually your email address — and Onstar.com password. Or, you can create a new account, but it’s very convenient to have these accounts linked.

Side Note: Even if you don’t have an active Onstar account and your free trial has expired….it’s handy to have an Onstar account created if your vehicle is equipped with the Onstar system.

mychevrolet6

From the Chevrolet Owner Center, you will be able to access service records, read your owner’s manual, see how-to videos about your vehicle, be alerted to recall notices and even link to your SiriusXM, GM Rewards cards and Onstar accounts.

mychevrolet7

Using your Onstar account login, all the vehicles in your household associated with your Onstar account will populate in your Chevy Owner Center garage! In my garage, I can access my Chevy Cruze and my son’s Cruze as well. (His is the green one.) You can also add any other GM vehicles in your household to your garage.

mychevrolet3

By clicking on your vehicle’s profile, you get an overview of your total mileage and recall information. You can also request a service appointment online with your preferred dealer!

mychevrolet5

From your Chevy Owner Center maintenance icon, you can also see your scheduled maintenance, i.e. when the next oil change and tire rotation is recommended.

mychevrolet2

From your Chevrolet Owner Center, you can also view your vehicle’s warranty information. Notice my 2-Year Scheduled Maintenance Warranty is expired. Bummer!

Need Directions? BringGo It: How to Use the BringGo Navigation App in Chevy Trax, Sonic, Spark Mylink Systems

Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Last Update: June 2016

Please note: If you have a 2016 Sonic or Spark, you have Apple Car Play and Android Auto, which allows you to project your iPhone maps or your Google maps onto Chevy Mylink infotainment screen. You do not have Apple Car Play or Android Auto if you have a 2016 Trax, or 2013-2015 Sonic or Spark.

Did you know premium navigation capability is available in your 2013-2016 Chevrolet Trax, Sonic or Spark?

Yep! As long as you have a 2013 or newer version of the Chevy Mylink Infotainment System in one of the aforementioned Chevy vehicles, you can utilize BringGo — a high-end, full-feature, smart-phone-to-car navigation system.

Via bluetooth and USB connection, the BringGo navigation screen is mirrored to your infotainment unit in your Chevy. What’s different about BringGo is that app’s map data lives completely on your compatible smartphone, so you’re not using your phone plan’s data, like you would if you were using Google Maps.

The app is available for IOS and Android. It’s only 99 cents for a 30 day trial. After that, it’s a $50 one-time charge. Or, $60 if you want full access to available updates.
