GM Discontinues Discounts for Credit Union Members

General Motors announced its $750 rebate offer to Credit Union members ended Sept. 30, 2015, and will not be renewed. The program change was listed amidst other GM Discount updates as of October 1, including the end of GM’s USAA rebate.

This program change followed an earlier modification in July, when Credit Union members were no longer given the GM Supplier Pricing. Instead, credit union members were given a $750 rebate. As of Oct. 1, there are no more incentives for credit union members.

It’s possible GM will bring the USAA and Credit Union rebate programs back at some point. But for now, they no longer exist…

How to Get the GM Employee Discount

Updated Oct. 2, 2015

I love discounts! Don’t you? Everyone wants a discount. And when it comes to leasing or purchasing a new Chevrolet, I help my customers find every GM discount they can possibly qualify for at Berger Chevrolet. The biggest discount you can get on a new Chevrolet vehicle is the GM Employee Discount. The second biggest discount is the GM Supplier Discount. What’s even more exciting is that either of these generous discounts can be combined with current factory rebates and incentives.

How do you know if you qualify for the GM Employee Discount? Answer this question: Do you have a family member that works for General Motors or is a GM retiree, perhaps an uncle or a sister-in-law? Maybe your deceased grandfather? If so, does he have a surviving spouse?

If the answer to the question is “Yes” then great! You can get the GM Family Discount. However, you will need to provide what’s called a “GMS authorization number” before taking delivery of your vehicle. Your family member can visit gmfamilyfirst.com to obtain this number. You, the purchaser, will need to provide your family member with your date of birth and zip code to generate the code. Codes are valid up to six months.

If you don’t have anyone in your family who can obtain a GMS authorization number for you, perhaps you have a friend or acquaintance who is a GM Employee or Retiree who will give you the GM Supplier Discount for Friends. The GM Supplier Discount is the second best discount you can get from GM. Its discount code is known as a GSF authorization number, which can also be obtained at gmfamilyfirst.com.

Finally, if you don’t know an Eligible Participant in GM’s Vehicle Purchase Program, maybe you qualify for the GM Supplier Discount through your own place of employment. There are hundreds of GM Supplier companies, from parts manufacturers to food services to health organizations. Find out if your company is eligible for the GM Supplier Discount. To obtain a GSP authorization code, create an account at gmsupplierdiscount.com.

If all else fails, fear not. There are other types of discounts you can get on the purchase or lease of your new GM vehicle. These include the Military, Educator and College discounts — to name a few. See most recent updates to GM discount programs.

Still, the Employee discount and the Supplier discount can definitely offer the most savings. A GM vehicle invoice includes three prices. Based on the model, GM Employee and Supplier discounts are a percentage, based on the selected model. As an example, let’s look at a 2015 Malibu 1LT, with a power sliding sunroof and convenience features, such as rear camera, remote start and universal home remote:

MSRP – $26,860

GM Supplier Price – $25,656.55

GM Employee Price – $24,669.29

Who is Eligible to Give the GM Employee Discount and GM Supplier Discount?

Active employees of General Motors (not a supplier of GM) are eligible participants for GM’s Vehicle Purchase Program. Non-active employees must meet one of the following requirements: currently receiving GM pension or healthcare plan; vested in a GM pension; or if hired after 2001, worked for GM for a minimum of 5 years.

In addition, employees of GM Suppliers can share their discount with one other person within one year of using their discount themselves within one year.

What if the Eligible GM Employee is deceased?

Surviving spouses of GM employees become the eligible participant if they are currently receiving a GM pension or healthcare plan. New surviving spouses of retired UAW members receiving healthcare, but not a GM pension, are not eligible. If both the employee or retiree and the surviving spouse are deceased, their children might qualify for the GM Legacy Discount Program.

Who Qualifies to Receive the GM Family Discount?

Eligible participants are able to sponsor their spouses, children, grandchildren, parents, stepparents, grandparents (including in-law and step), siblings (including full, half and step), stepchildren, stepgrandchildren, mother-/father-in-law, sons-/ daughters-in-law, brothers-/sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Same-sex domestic partners (SSDPs) of eligible participants also qualify, where applicable. (Note: Eligible SSDPs are treated the same as spouses and, therefore, their eligible family members are also included.)

Please note: Individuals who are employed by a state or federal organization may not be sponsored as purchaser/lessee due to relevant government rules.  See the complete GM Discount Rules.

Why Cruze Diesel is the New Black

I’ve sold three 2014 Cruze Diesel models over the last year. And I’m a fan.

We currently have 11 2014 Cruze Diesel models (and two 2015 models) in our inventory at Berger Chevrolet and I decided people should know more about this diesel sedan option for their next vehicle purchase. Before I go on, please note there is $3500 factory rebate on 2014 model year Cruze’s this month. That’s on top of any other incentives buyers qualify for, like the GM Employee Discount or even the Credit Union Discount.

So, back the the 2014 Cruze Diesel, specifically… Each of my Cruze Diesel owners are engineers in the auto industry. One is an actual GM employee. Two are women.

The 2.0 L turbo charged clean diesel 2014 Cruze gets 48 mpg. You can travel 717 miles on one tank, which is about halfway from Detroit to Fort Lauderdale. Topping the Volkswagen Jetta TDI diesel, the Cruze Diesel has 151 horsepower and 264 pound-foot of torque. About 400 lbs. heavier than the gas-engine Cruze, the Diesel model has some serious power and is a blast to drive. It’s German-built diesel engine includes overboost function, providing additional torque for extra passing power.

With an MSRP of around $27K, the 2014 Cruze Diesel comes standard with leather upholstery, rear vision camera, remote start, 17′ alloy wheels, 6-speed automatic transmission, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat and heating for both front buckets. Chevy MyLink, a seven-inch touchscreen display system and Bluetooth connectivity are also standard. Includes a diesel fuel app to show drivers where they can fill up.

At the 2LT Cruze trim levell, all 2014 Cruze models come with “driver convenience package” including an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, illuminated vanity mirrors, a rear-view camera and heated side mirrors. The Cruze Diesel’s design features an aerodynamic package, including front grill air shutters and a spoiler. There’s also an enhanced safety package option that adds blind spot monitoring, rear parking assistance and cross-traffic alerts — none of which are offered on the Jetta. The Cruze Diesel earned a 5-star safety rating, helped by 10 standard airbags.

Other goodies with a 2014 or newer Chevy include six-month Onstar and three-month XM radio trials, Onstar Remote Link Key Fob Service (which allows you to start your car from your phone and is free for 5 years even without an Onstar subscription), 5 years Chevy Roadside Assistance and two years free scheduled maintenance, including oil changes, tire rotations, 27-point inspection, oil filter and diesel exhaust fluid refill.

How to Get the GM Military Discount

Are you eligible for GM’s Military Discount?

Active Duty members, Reserves, Veterans within one year of discharge date and Retirees – including their spouses – of the U.S. Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines, National Guard and Coast Guard are qualified to receive the GM Military Discount on new 2015 or 2016 Chevrolet models, according to GM’s Military Discount Program Overview.

To take advantage of this opportunity, you must request an authorization number by creating an account at GMmilitarydiscount.com. Authorization numbers may be requested for the purchase or lease of two (2) vehicles per calendar year and are valid for six (6) months from the date of request.

The Military Discount offers “GM Preferred Pricing,” i.e. GM Supplier Pricing. This discount can be combined with most other GM incentives and rebates. Print your authorization number and take it to your participating GM Dealer along with a copy of your current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES) or your discharge papers (e.g., DD-214) to your GM Dealer when you are ready to purchase or lease.

How USAA Members Get a GM Discount

Updated Oct. 2, 2015 – As of Oct. 1, 2015, GM has discontinued the USAA discount. See GM Discontinues USAA Discount

Did you know qualifying members of USAA can receive a $750 discount? This discount is stackable with most other GM incentives and rebates, including the GM Military Discount.

What “qualifies” a USAA (United Services Automobile Association) member to receive the $750 manufacturer discount? The rules are somewhat vague, as USAA says that not all members qualify. But from what I’ve observed, the discount can be used by any USAA member that maintains one of USAA’s financial products, i.e. auto insurance, banking or investments.

To receive the USAA discount, you will need to provide proof to your GM dealer as GM requires dealers to show proof of all discounts applied to a purchase or lease. A copy of your current USAA auto insurance ID card is ideal and will guarantee the discount.

However, in the case the USAA member doesn’t have a USAA auto insurance ID card or doesn’t carry the USAA auto insurance,  the car buyer must contact USAA directly. USAA does not accept calls from dealers or sales consultants.

To obtain a $750 GM discount from USAA without a USAA insurance ID card, the USAA member must, personally, call USAA at 1-800-531-8285. Request an ” eligibility confirmation letter and authorization number” in regards to USAA’s GM Discount Program. This letter is to be faxed to the dealer to the sale’s consultant’s attention.

USAA membership is open to U.S. military service members, veterans with an honorable discharge, and their eligible family members. USAA also offer some products to individuals with no military affiliation.

How School Employees Can Get a GM Discount

Updated: October 2, 2015

General Motors is giving all School Employees a discount equivalent to GM Supplier Pricing on the purchase or lease of a new Chevrolet!

The GM Educator Discount is offered to the entire education community, including current employees of a public school, private school, college or university. This program provides the same price GM suppliers receive on the purchase or lease of a new Chevrolet. Plus, participants can combine this discount with most current offers to save even more.

To take advantage of this opportunity, participants must create an account at GMeducatordiscount.com. Once logged in to the site, you can request an authorization number for the purchase or lease of a new Chevrolet. You may request up to two authorizations for up to (2) vehicles. GM Educator Discount authorization numbers are valid through Sept. 30, 2015.

Simply take your authorization number and a recent pay stub or ID badge from your school to your GM Dealer when you are ready to purchase or lease.

See program details at gmeducatordiscount.com for more information. Or contact Sylvia at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Michigan, 616-575-9624.

How To Qualify for the GM Recall Discount

Do you own a Pontiac, Saturn or older Chevrolet? If so, you might qualify for GM Employee Pricing on the purchase or lease of a new Chevrolet! It’s called the GM Recall Discount and, just like the GM Employee Discount, it’s the best discount you can receive on a GM vehicle. To sweeten the deal, you can use this discount on top of all factory rebates and some manufacturer incentives. General Motors is keeping the GM Recall Discount offer on the down low, and it’s only available for a limited time. So, here’s the scoop:

Usually, only family members of a GM Employee or Retiree can take advantage of the Employee Vehicle Purchase Program. But now through Jan. 5, 2015, General Motors is offering special Employee Pricing on the purchase or lease of 2014-2015 vehicles to people who own one of the following:

  • 2005-2010 Cobalt
  • 2006-2011 HHR
  • 2007-2010 Pontiac G5
  • 2007-2010 Saturn Sky
  • 2003-2007 Saturn Ion
  • 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice

All you need is a current registration or title* of one of the qualifying GM recall vehicles list above in order to receive the GM Recall Discount (a.k.a. discount code LDN). You don’t have to trade in the qualifying vehicle to receive the discount. *If the registration does not show your name, then you must also provide proof of insurance, with your name on it, for the qualifying VIN.

In addition, these owners can also use GM Card points on top of this offer. Or, these owners can use a $500 discount offer on Certified Pre-Owned Chevy models.

Last Chance to Lease a 2014 Chevy Cruze

(Post updated Dec. 2, 2014)

Looking for a low payment on a brand new car for the holidays? Hear this: 2014 Chevrolet Cruze lease programs have been extended through the end of 2014!

I lease a Cruze myself and I truly love my car. My 20-year-old son is also driving a leased Cruze. The Chevy Cruze is great on gas, good in the snow and safe with 10 standard airbags and safety-cage construction.

Pay $179 a month for 36 months, 12 thousand miles a year, for the following scenario:

  • Trade a car in that’s worth around $2500 or put that much down (Down payment or trade is not required. This is just an example).
  • Qualify for the ONE of the following discounts: Credit Union, Military, Recent Graduate, GM supplier or GM Educator (any public or private school or university employee)
  • 700 credit — NOTE: Having limited or less than perfect credit and/or having negative equity on your trade will obviously increase the payment. But no biggie, it’s worth it.

Save even more if you get the GM Family Discount, are a USAA member, or have other leases in your household.

This scenario assumes you select 2014 Chevrolet Cruze with a $21,855 sticker price. This specific vehicle gets 38 mpg, includes remote start, power driver seat, auto-dimming mirror chevy mylink color touch screen, blue tooth streaming, rear camera, 5 years remote link app, 6 months Onstar directions/connections, 3 months XMSirius Radio, 2 yrs free scheduled maintenance and 5 years roadside assistance.

Do you live in or are you willing to drive to West Michigan for a new car?  Contact Sylvia for details! Or call, Sylvia  at 616-575-9624.
