How to Setup Your New Chevy with the Chevrolet Owner Center

I just had my first experience trading in my previous GM model car and trading it in for a new one. And I want to share something I learned! Last weekend, I traded my 2014 Cruze LT for a 2016 Chevy Cruze LT.

I got out of my lease a year early, but I decided it was worth it for a few perks I wanted to have in my life. In my new car, I’ve got Apple Car Play and 24/7. I wrote a separate post about how awesome my new Cruze. But what I want to talk about in this post is about what I learned logging into Chevrolet Owner Center.

  1. Onstar Welcome Call: One of the first things to do when you take delivery of a new Chevrolet is to complete your Onstar Welcome Call.
  2. Create an Onstar Account: I didn’t need to do this, because I had an Onstar account I had created with my previous Cruze. But, if you didn’t create an Onstar account with your previous GM vehicle at Onstar.Com or via your Onstar Remote Link app, then you will need to use your new Onstar account number to do so. (Your Onstar advisor can give this to you during the Welcome Call, or it will come in your first Onstar email.) Create a user name and password.
  3. Login to the Chevrolet Owner Center: Visit and use your Onstar username and password to login. I took delivery of my new Cruze 6 days ago and finally got around to logging in today. To my delight, a window popped up with a picture of my new car titled “Welcome to MyChevrolet Owner SetUp.” Chevrolet Owner Center New Owner Set Up
  4. Click on “Get started” to customize your Wi-Fi hotspot username and password and ensure your advanced diagnostic notifications.
  5. Learn to pair (or re-pair) your bluetooth deviceChevy bluetooth pairing
  6. Practice sending a navigation route to your car via Onstar Guidance.Chevy navigation
  7. Discover ways to use the MyChevrolet app.mychevyapp
  8. Track your vehicle’s warranty, as well as be notified if your vehicle has a recall and keep all your service records in one place.chevy warranty tracker
  9. There’s so much more you can do and learn at your Chevrolet Owner Center, such as watch how to videos about your vehicle’s features, flip through your owner’s manual.

7 Things To Do When You Buy a New Chevy

Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.

I’m learning that people can easily get overwhelmed when they buy a new car. It can be hectic at the dealership. There are so many decisions to make, a lot of waiting around and tons of new information to digest.

Sometimes, by the end of a car deal, car buyers have simply had enough. There are a few new car owners who don’t even want to learn more about their new car; they just want to take their keys and go. But really, they’re missing out on a variety of features they could enjoy in their new Chevrolet.

In case this sounds like you, I’ve created a few tips to help you take advantage of — at least some — of the features your new Chevrolet offers. And, I strongly recommend you schedule a follow up appointment with your sales consultant (hopefully it was me) to review some of the technology features in your new vehicle, such as Chevy Mylink, bluetooth, Apple Car Play/Android Auto, Onstar, 4G LTE Wifi, and the Remote Link App.

Here are 7 things to do immediately, after taking delivery of your new Chevrolet:

  1. Take your picture with your new car. Post it to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter; text it, email it — and tell your friends about your sales consultant and the great service you hopefully received.
  2. Pair your phone to enjoy your vehicle’s blue tooth capabilities. Let your sales consultant help you, or check for the easy directions in your owner’s manual. Try bluetooth media streaming, Siri Hands Free and more!
  3. Push the blue Onstar button on your rear view mirror to complete your Onstar
Onstar welcome call. You will be asked to create a 4-digit pin, and customize a user name and password for your vehicle’s WiFi. Ask your advisor for your Onstar account number and write it down. Your advisor might ask you if you’d like to be enrolled in Dealer Maintenance Notifications. Say “yes.” You might also be asked if you’d like to be enrolled in continuous coverage or to buy WiFi data, both of which is completely up to you.
  4. Onstar Remote Link AppDownload the Onstar Remote Link App. Once in the App, go to “Create Account” and use the account number you received during the Onstar Welcome Call. (If you didn’t get it, don’t worry. It will come in your email within 24 hours of your Welcome Call.) Login with your new account info to enjoy the FREE Key Fob service for 5 years, even without keeping an Onstar paid subscription. P.S. Your 2016 or newer Chevy also comes with a 3-month WiFi trial AND with Onstar Basic for 5 years, including diagnostics and dealer maintenance notification (excludes emergency services). Learn more about Chevrolet apps.
  5. Try out Onstar Directions and Connections. Push the blue Onstar button and ask an advisor to send directions to your next destination. Learn how to store a destination and plan a route! You can also send directions to your car using your Remote Link app from anywhere. Directions will begin once the car starts.
  6. MyChevrolet AppGo to and login using your Onstar account login information. Here, you can manage ALL your GM vehicles‘ service records, warranty info, recall alerts, how-to videos and owners’ manuals. You can also access all your vehicles’ Sirius XM, GM Reward Card and Onstar accounts from the portal. Learn more.
  7. Download the MyChevrolet App. This app gives you easier access to call roadside assistance (which you get free for 5 years in a new Chevy). It also allows you to set parking reminders, access your Remote Link App, schedule a service appointment, view your owner’s manual and understand what light indicators mean in your car — all from the app. Learn more about Chevrolet apps.

The other thing that drives me crazy as a sales person, is that people actually forget they have free oil changes with their new car. I’ve had customers tell me they paid for their first oil change. Don’t let that be you! I want to remind you that you get two years free scheduled maintenance and free roadside assistance for five years from Chevrolet (or, free with Onstar while you have the free trial or a paid subscription).

Here are the complete details about your new Chevy’s service and warranties.

Take advantage of your two-year free scheduled maintenance, as well as five years roadside assistance and Onstar Basic.

Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.

I finally logged in to the Chevrolet Owner Center at and it was glorious. It’s a comprehensive way to manage all the service, warranty and extra offers that come with your GM vehicle. And, you can manage all the GM vehicles in your household in one place!

If you took delivery of a new GM vehicle recently, check out How to Setup Your New Chevy with the Chevrolet Owner Center.

The best way to log in to the Owner Center is to use your account user name — usually your email address — and password. Or, you can create a new account, but it’s very convenient to have these accounts linked.

Side Note: Even if you don’t have an active Onstar account and your free trial has expired….it’s handy to have an Onstar account created if your vehicle is equipped with the Onstar system.

From the Chevrolet Owner Center, you will be able to access service records, read your owner’s manual, see how-to videos about your vehicle, be alerted to recall notices and even link to your SiriusXM, GM Rewards cards and Onstar accounts.

Using your Onstar account login, all the vehicles in your household associated with your Onstar account will populate in your Chevy Owner Center garage! In my garage, I can access my Chevy Cruze and my son’s Cruze as well. (His is the green one.) You can also add any other GM vehicles in your household to your garage.

By clicking on your vehicle’s profile, you get an overview of your total mileage and recall information. You can also request a service appointment online with your preferred dealer!

From your Chevy Owner Center maintenance icon, you can also see your scheduled maintenance, i.e. when the next oil change and tire rotation is recommended.

From your Chevrolet Owner Center, you can also view your vehicle’s warranty information. Notice my 2-Year Scheduled Maintenance Warranty is expired. Bummer!

From you Chevrolet Owner Center account page, you can update your personal information, as well as view your linked Onstar, GM Rewards cards and SiriusXM Satellite accounts.

Chevy 2-Year Complete Care: Friends Don’t Let Friends Pay for Oil Changes

Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Don’t you hate it when your friends don’t listen to you? I do! Especially, when the information you share is helpful to them.

I visited my best friend Stacey in Traverse City recently. Heading to a yoga class Sunday morning, we rode in her 2015 Chevy Cruze LS she leased from me last summer.

I noticed the “Change Oil Soon” alert on her DIC (Driver Information Center) screen, driving into town. I’m like… “Stacey, I’ve never seen this alert come up before. I wonder how much oil you actually have left.” I reached over from the passenger seat to scroll through her DIC menu. She had 18K+ miles on the car. And the remaining oil life? ZERO! She literally had 0 percent remaining oil life!

I said, “Stacey, you can’t be driving this car without any oil!” She retorted that she’s been busy, plus oil changes are expensive; it cost $50 the previous two times she took the Cruze to her mechanic, she told me. “What?!” I gasped! “Stacey, you have a brand new leased Chevrolet. Your only mechanic is a GM dealer and your oil changes are free! The Chevy dealer will shuttle you to work and back so they can do the oil change while you’re at work. I told you this so many times!”

How could this happen? My best friend — a busy single mom — who I really wanted to make sure she took advantage of her new car free perks — had payed for her last two oil changes. Despite the fact that I told her several times about the free scheduled maintenance — in person, at delivery, over the phone, via text and email and even in snail mail. Still, she had somehow missed the part where she gets free oil changes.

It makes me wonder…If my own friends aren’t listening to me about their free scheduled maintenance, how are my other customers are handling their vehicle’s service needs?

So please, let me remind youChevrolet 2-Year Scheduled Maintenance coverage is included with the purchase or lease of new 2014 and newer Chevrolet models.

Chevrolet 2-Year Scheduled Maintenance includes only the following:

  • 2-year/24,000-mile Scheduled Maintenance (whichever comes first; up to a total of two service events for ’16 models, or 4 service events for ’14 and ’15 models):
  • ACDelco dexos1®Oil and ACDelco Oil Filter Change (excludes Spark EV)
  • 4-wheel Tire Rotation (excludes dual rear wheel vehicles, all Corvette models and select Camaro models – ZL1 model and 1LE package cars – due to their unidirectional tires; see Owner’s Manual for details)
  • 27-Point Vehicle Inspection (MPVI)

It’s also worth noting that a new Chevrolet comes with the free 5 Years Roadside Assistance Program

Chevrolet is proud to offer the response, security and convenience of the 24-Hour Roadside Assistance Program. Roadside Assistance is provided with all purchased or leased GM vehicles that are within the Powertrain Limited Warranty (5 years/100K miles on ’14 and ’15 models or 5 yeasr/60K miles on ’16 models).

  • Emergency Towing (from a public road or highway to nearest Chevrolet dealer)
  • Lockout Service (keys locked inside vehicle)
  • Flat Tire Changes (service to change a flat tire with the spare tire (if equipped))
  • Fuel Delivery (enough fuel for vehicle to get to the nearest service station)
  • Jump-Starts (service to jumpstart a dead battery

Contact a Chevrolet Roadside Assistance Program advisor at 1-800-243-8872 OR push the blue Onstar Button and say “Roadside.” (Even if your Onstar trial is over or your Onstar account is inactive, you can still call Roadside this way.)

Get Your Vehicle Ready to Make an Appearance

Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Sylvia Dana, sales consultant at Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Is your vehicle ready for its road-way appearance this season?

With Appearance Protection, your new or used vehicle from Berger Chevrolet can look showroom ready, long after you take it home.

Whether you want the effect of Rain-X on steroids for your windshield or you want to reduce road noise by 30 percent, I’ve got a protection you can add to your vehicle to enhance your vehicle’s value at trade-in time. The most important appearance product might be Corrosion Protection, i.e. rustproofing.

Some customers ask me why their new vehicle doesn’t come with corrosion protection from the factory. It does, in fact, come with a rust-through protection for 6 years or 100,000 miles. GM vehicles are designed to resist corrosion. However — and it’s a big caveat — GM’s anti-corrosion warranty doesn’t cover damage due to environmental factors, such as salt from the winter roads in Michigan.

As your sales consultant at Berger, I work directly with Great Lakes Chemical in Grand Rapids, Mich. — and can offer you the best deal — for all your appearance protection needs, including paint, interior, corrosion, windshield and wheel protection, as well as sound treatment undercoating.

Whether you lease, finance or own your vehicle, I offer a variety of package combinations to keep your vehicle protected and looking great. Pricing ranges from $249 to $998, which can be added to your payments or paid for separately.

Contact me to make your Appearance Protection appointment today!

I offer the following Appearance Protection products for any and all of the vehicles in your household:

Paint Protection – Nano-based sealant applied to exterior painted and chrome surfaces eliminates need for waxing and creates a durable finish. Protects against environmental damages caused by tree sap, acid rain, bird waste, UV rays and hard water spots. Includes seven year environmental warranty.

Interior Protection – Protects against food and beverage stains, bleaches and dyes, fading, discoloration, mold/mildew and cracking of the dash from the sun’s UV rays. Comes with 7 year warranty.

Corrosion Protection – Petroleum-based chemical designed to resist corrosion perforation. Protects against road salt, calcium chloride and exposure to the elements for long lasting protection. Comes with a 10 year warranty for new cars and seven years for pre-owned vehicles. (When packaged with Paint Protection includes a 5 year surface warranty for new cars and three years for pre-owned cars.)

Electronic Corrosion Protection – Used in place of the chemical process, Electronic Corrosion Protection was developed by NASA engineers. A module using radio frequency and pulse-wave technology is installed to protect all grounded components from corrosion perforation. This protection is transferable to other vehicles, is environmentally friendly and covers vehicle inside out.

Undercoat/Sound Treatment – Asphalt-based rubberized coating is sprayed to the applicable components of the undercarriage. It protects and insulates the vehicle’s under body from moisture, salt spray and corrosive chemicals. It also reduces road noise by 30 percent. (If you don’t add undercoating, but only Corrosion Protection, your rust proof product is applied to the under body.)

Diamon Fusion – A two-step application process designed to strengthen your windshield up to 10x. The first step fills in pores of the glass to reduce the road glare, bringing down night glare by 35 percent. The second step creates a water resistant layer to repel rain, snow and ice.

Wheel Protection – Solvent based coating applied to your rims, creating a protective bond to the clear coat. This hand-polished product makes the wheels easier to clean, protects against brake dust and keeps your wheels looking new.
